The Saints of Summer: Hidden Gems on the Church Calendar

As summer settles in and routines shift, the Church’s calendar keeps quietly marching on; offering us not only the structure of Ordinary Time, but also the witness of saints whose lives can inspire our own. These “saints of summer” may not always grab headlines, but their stories speak powerfully to our need for courage, holiness, and hope in the ordinary.

June 28: St. Irenaeus

A second-century bishop and theologian, Irenaeus was a defender of the faith in a time of great confusion and heresy. His most famous line still resonates today: “The glory of God is man fully alive.” He reminds us that to live fully in Christ is our greatest calling.

July 6: St. Maria Goretti

At only eleven years old, Maria gave her life resisting an assault, choosing to forgive her attacker even as she lay dying. Her radical purity, mercy, and strength continue to inspire young people and adults alike to live with integrity and forgiveness.

July 11: St. Benedict of Nursia

The father of Western monasticism, Benedict wrote a rule of life centered on balance, prayer, and work (ora et labora). In a culture of noise and hurry, his legacy encourages us to seek stability, silence, and sacred rhythms—even in summer’s freedom.

July 22: St. Mary Magdalene

The first witness to the Resurrection, Mary Magdalene is honored as the “apostle to the apostles.” Her story speaks to the power of redemption and the importance of personal relationship with Jesus—especially for those who feel unworthy or forgotten.

August 11: St. Clare of Assisi

A close follower of St. Francis, Clare embraced radical poverty and deep trust in God. Her life is a challenge to all of us tempted by comfort or control. From behind the walls of her monastery, she shone with a light that reached the world.

These are just a few of the saints who accompany us through the summer months. Their feast days aren’t just liturgical curiosities; they are invitations to holiness in every season of life. Whether you’re traveling, resting, or still in the thick of daily work, consider reading about these saints, praying with their words, or celebrating their feast days with your family.

Summer is a gift. So are the saints. Let them walk with you.

Praised be Jesus Christ, King of All the Saints, now and forever!
All you holy saints of God, pray for us!

Peace in Christ,
Fr. Michael Silloway
